Metabolic Tests

Metabolism is the biochemical process of combining food with oxygen to create energy. Metabolism varies from person to person depending on many factors including lifestyle, genetics, nutrition, and age. We think of ourselves as having a fast, slow, high, or low metabolism. Instead, we should change our perception…our metabolism is neither good nor bad; it is what it is, ours. Weight loss, weight maintenance, or weight gain all depend upon the notion of caloric balance.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR):

Your resting metabolism—meaning the amount of energy required to do all the things a body does at rest, from the breathing you hardly even notice to the thinking you’re doing at this very moment—commands most of your calories. Learning how to maximize that number is a key component in weight management.

Total Metabolic Rate (TMR):

Total metabolic rate is the total number of calories our bodies need doing its thing throughout an average day, from sitting at a computer answering emails to sweeping the kitchen floor. This value is determined by multiplying your RMR by an activity factor that is selected by looking at your occupation, basically what your day is like from the time you get up in the morning till you go to bed.


Determining Activity Factor:

In determining how many calories an individual needs to take in, we must look closely at that person’s lifestyle. Specifically, we need to find out how they spend their day, what is their occupation. At this point, exercise isn’t taken into the equation, just the activities that they normally do throughout the day, from morning to night. To do this, an activity factor (multiplier) is used to determine a client’s Total Metabolic Rate. The American Dietetic Association uses the following multipliers to help determine an individual’s Total Metabolic Rate.

1.3 VERY LIGHT

Individual has a typical office job: sitting behind a desk for most of the day, answering emails or phone calls, attending meetings, etc.“Very Light” can also include a senior citizen who spends the majority of their day seated.


1.4 LIGHT

Throughout the day, this individual is primarily on their feet, walking around. The job does not contain a physical or manual component. Examples include a teacher, personal trainer, and the average “stay at home mom.”


1.5 MODERATE

This category now contains some sort of physical component to the day, as well as having the characteristics of Light. Examples include a UPS driver or a factory assembly worker.


1.6 HEAVY PHYSICAL

This individual is performing heavy manual work throughout the day. Examples include a construction worker or a brick layer.
